I think I do that because it's the only one in town. If there were more than one, I'd probably say, "I'm going to Wal-Mart," or, "I'm going to the south-side Wal-Mart."
Or, it's because it sounds more natural to say "the" than with other stores. I wouldn't say that I was going to the Safeway, the Papa Murphy's or the Costco, but I would go to the Plaid Pantry, the Home Depot or the Holiday Inn.
I'd only say "Wal-Marts" if I was going to more than one in an outing.
This reminds me of the scene in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, when Everett and Delmar get kicked out of Woolworth's, and the guy says, "...and stay out of the Woolsworth!"
